What Is the Marvins Room Movie About?
A man who had a stroke 17 years ago is left incapacitated and bed-ridden.
He has been cared for by his daughter Bessie (Diane Keaton) in their Florida home, and totally ignored by his other daughter, Lee (Meryl Streep), who moved to Ohio with her husband 20 years ago and has never contacted her family.
Now, however, Bessie’s doctor has informed her that she has leukemia and needs a bone marrow transplant and she turns to her sister for help.
When they arrive, Hank refuses to get out of the car and the initial meeting with Marvin goes badly.
Hank refuses to be tested to see if he is a bone marrow match.
He accuses Bessie of wanting to stay away from the family, so Bessie tries to build a relationship with him.
She gifts to Hank her father’s tools from his bedroom, and he takes her on a drive along the beach.
He eventually confides in her about what went on in the institution and agrees to be tested.
What unfolds is a story about sacrifice, family dysfunction, and what it truly means to love someone at the cost of your own life.

Behind the Scenes: What DiCaprio and Streep Said About Each Other
The on-set dynamic between the three leads was electric.
Streep said, “I finally got some credibility in my own household when Leo called me ‘da bomb’. I thought ‘da bomb’ was a bad thing, but no.”
She also noted: “On ‘Marvin’s Room’ I realized that I learn from De Niro all the time.”
DiCaprio told the New York Daily News in 2006: “There I am at 19, saying, ‘Oh God, that’ll look terrible!’ And then I saw her on screen of course and thought, ‘Wow, she’s running circles around everybody!'”

Final Verdict
The Marvins Room movie is a small, quiet film that just happens to feature four of the most decorated actors in cinema history, all operating at their peak.
Diane Keaton does not just act in this film. She lives in it, carrying the weight of years of sacrifice in every single expression.
Meryl Streep took the less sympathetic role and made it completely human.
And a 19-year-old Leonardo DiCaprio proved, even then, that he could hold his own against legends.
With Diane Keaton’s passing still fresh, her Bonhams estate auction making headlines, and the 2026 Oscars In Memoriam tribute still echoing, there has never been a more fitting moment to discover this film.
